Take Stock in Children, Walton County

TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN is a program serving the students in the state of Florida by providing support to achieve life-changing opportunities through mentoring and scholarships. Established in 1995, and serving Walton County under the nonprofit Walton Education Foundation in 1996, Take Stock in Children pairs students ready to achieve academically with community mentors to aide in their success to earn a college scholarship upon high school graduation.

What is your student’s plan after high school? Attending a Florida college or university is a real possibility with the support through the Take Stock in Children, Walton County scholarship and mentor program. Each student is paired with a mentor and provided resources and tools to achieve college and career readiness to align them with success to secure their scholarships. Students are held accountable for their grades, attendance, behavior, and commit to remain drug and crime free. At graduation and completion of the program, graduating students are awarded a 60-credit hour Florida Prepaid scholarship through Project STARS.

Students and guardians can expect to report the following information when completing the TSIC (Take Stock in Children) application and must follow the guidelines and criteria below:

  • Attend a Walton County middle or high school
  • Be a currently enrolled Walton County student in the 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th grades
  • Have a minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Show Determination to Succeed!
  • Demonstrate Financial Need (Applicants should be prepared to submit 2023 Taxes, IRS (Internal Revenue Service) Form 1040, with the student as a dependent.)

TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN, WALTON COUNTY PROGRAM IMPACT

  • TSIC Walton County has served students in its Take Stock in Children program since 1996.
  • Our Walton County program is proud to have 49 students currently enrolled as college students.
  • On average there are 30 students enrolled in our Take Stock college scholarship and mentor program.
  • At high school graduation, students receive access to their 2-year Florida College Scholarship (60 credit hours).
  • On average, we have 30 active student mentors enrolled in our program who mentor an average of 300 hours per school year.

A Take Stock in Children mentor commits to donating up to 1 hour per month (two 30-min sessions) during the school year to mentor in-person. Meeting topics may include helping a student set goals, or simply listening and providing encouragement.

Each school year our Take Stock Program offers workshops for students, their families and mentors to learn and plan for high school graduation and beyond. Understanding your GPA matters, but so does your credit score and with that college independence comes financial responsibility.

Take Stock in Children, Inc. is a nonprofit mentoring, college success, and college scholarship organization dedicated to transforming Florida one student at a time.
